Y’all. Said’s Not Dead.

Okay yes good it’s great to know more specific words for what your character is doing sometimes–it helps to show their personalities via action and help the reader to understand how they contribute to the story.

But don’t be afraid of said.

This is for a lot of reasons:

1) It’s invisible. If what your character is saying describes how they say it enough on its own, you don’t need a fancy verb. In fact, fancy verbs can clutter your work if used too much.

2) It’s ambiguous when written that way. Wanna add some mystery and tension to your dialogue? Of course you do. Plus, we’ve all had circumstances irl where we can’t understand somebody else’s tone.

3) It strengthens you as a writer. In journalism school, we were told to stay away from specific verbs while quoting because they put an action in our source’s mouth, so to speak–how they said something is a subjective opinion and thus can lead to biased writing. When you learn to default to said, you’re forced to watch what your source is saying more and to let that do the talking for your story instead of your descriptions.

In creative writing, said makes you focus more on the contents of your dialogue itself, your characters’ actions, the atmosphere, the way somebody’s hand flutters on somebody else’s shoulder–the good shit. Not how people are saying shit.

In short: Sometimes knowing fancy verbs for saying things is helpful. But said is also just as helpful.

Bookworm Question

Do you think saying whether a book has a happy/sad/bittersweet/etc ending - without revealing what actually happened - is a spoiler?

mirror-of-too-many-books

Tbh, I’d never thought it might count as a spoiler! I usually add “happy ending” or “ending made me cry” in reviews, unless the ending is a plot twist or very difficult to predict until you get there. I feel like in maybe most stories I read, the kind of ending you’ll have is already implied from the beginning, based on the genre/premise, plus the tone of the book if you read the first pages. But sometimes people check reviews to make sure the happy-looking story they want to read because they like happy endings won’t end in a tragic twist. So I usually mention just the tone of the ending?

(and for two other games): Wow, if I had a nickel for every time a beautiful moon boy got taken over by an eldritch abomination, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice, right?“

Anonymous asked:

are there any writing blogs you follow that you would recommend?

tlaquetzqui answered:

Not specific blogs but I follow a bunch of worldbuilding-related and writing-advice tags, here on Tumblr. A lot of my opinions and ideas about writing just come from trial and error, or reading TV Tropes (sometimes reading TV Tropes and being annoyed with how the Browncoats with undergrad English degrees, who run that joint, interpret things…).

Not a blog, but I recommend Terrible Writing Advice, on YouTube, and the book How Not to Write a Novel by Howard Mittelmark and Sandra Newman. This might sound odd but I also suggest watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Rifftrax, and reading what the Amazing Colossal Episode Guide (including its continuation on the SciFi Channel website, now hosted at the MST3K Info Club site) says about the movies. What not to do is easier to pick up.

Specifically for SF writing, there’s Winchell Chung’s Atomic Rockets site. Just ignore everything he says about social sciences.

Hey I know this isn't something that's very much out there. But, Cuba is going through allot of shit right now. And it be, really great If yall spread awareness about this the best way you can just like we do with everything else. I have family and friends risking their lives out there trying to fight for a better life under their cruel fucking system and it's not fair that we cant do much but watch..

I'm dominican Cuban. I was raised by my cuban family for the most part and have been taught of the cruel injustice that's driven them away from their homes.

The fact that, this isn't very known out there doesn't really surprise me but please. The best we can do is spread awareness where they can't.

Cubans are starving, struggling in the pandemic, and being silenced for far too fucking long. Let us spread their voice please.
